Wednesday, 19th September, the 43rd PFF
The premiere screenings of three films from the Main Competition open the program on the third day of the Festival. On Wednesday, September 19th, 2018 the audience will see: “Krew Boga” (The Mute) directed by Bartosz Konopka, “Wilkołak” (Werewolf) by Adrian Panek and “7 uczuć” (7 emotions) by Marek Koterski. Press screenings of these pictures will be held at 9:00 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. respectively in the Warsaw screening room of the Gdynia Film Centre. After each screening there will be a live press conference broadcast on the Festival’s channel on YouTube.
We also recommend screenings of the competing festival films, taking place in conjunction with meetings with the creators and open to everyone with accreditation and the general public. On Wednesday it will be: “Krew Boga” (The Mute) by Bartosz Konopka at 2:30 p.m. in the Musical Theatre, “Wilkołak” (Werewolf) by Adrian Panek at 7:30 p.m. at Multikino in the screening room No. 2, “Juliusz” (Julius) by Aleksander Pietrzak at 8:30 p.m. at Multikino in screening room No. 6, “Kamerdyner” (The Butler) by Filip Bajon at 11:00 a.m. in the Musical Theatre and at 12:30 p.m. in Multikino in screening room No. 6, „Kler” (Clergy) by Wojciech Smarzowski at 5:30 p.m. in the Musical Theatre, and “Ułaskawienie” (Pardon) by Jan Jakub Kolski at 4:00 p.m. in Multikino – screening room No. 2, and at 9:00 p.m. it the Musical Theatre. The above-mentioned screenings will be followed by meetings with the film creators.
It will also be possible to talk to the creators of selected films from the Visions Apart Competition. Meetings will take place after the screenings of: “53 wojny” (53 Wars) by Ewa Bukowska at 9:40 p.m. on the New Stage of the Musical Theatre and “Dzień Czekolady” (The Day of Chocolate) by Jacek Piotr Bławut at 9:00 a.m. in the Musical Theatre.
We also invite to a screening of “Zimna Wojna” (Cold War) by Pawel Pawlikowski with audio description and subtitles. The screening, which was planned for people with impairments, will be held in Multikino – screening room no. 6, on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Film screenings of the Short Film Competition is underway. We will present on the New Stage of the Musical Theater, September 19th, blocks IV, V and VI, at, consecutively, 10:00 a.m., 12:20 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. respectively. The audience who will choose to attend these screenings will also see films from the Legal Culture Spot Competition.
On Wednesday, at 6:00 p.m. there will be presented “Rysopis” (Identification Marks: None) by Jerzy Skolimowski from 1964 in Goplana screening room of the Gdynia Film Centre. A special screening of this year’s winner of the Platinum Lions will be supplemented with a documentary by Marcin Borchardt and Jerzy Rados entitled “Jerzy Skolimowski ogląda Rysopis” (Jerzy Skolimowski is watching Identification Marks: None). Its creators will meet with the audience.
We invite to the screening of “Kobieta samotna” (A Woman Alone) directed by Agnieszka Holland, which is a part of the Pure Classics Competition. The screening will take place in Goplana screening room at 3:30 p.m. in Gdynia Film Centre. It will be followed by a meeting with a scriptwriter, Maciej Karpiński. “Poszukiwany Poszukiwana” (Man – Woman Wanted) will also be presented in the Pure Classics. In Memoriam section, and so we will commemorate Wojciech Pokora. We invite to the screening, which will take place at 1:30 p.m. in Gdynia film Centre, Morskie Oko screening room.
There is also a new section – Polonica, which presents the contribution of Polish creators in international film productions. On Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. it will be possible to see “Escape”, a film made by Agnieszka Piotrowska and Joe Njagu in Zimbabwe. The screening and meeting with the co-director will take place in the Goplana screening room at Gdynia Film Centre. Earlier, at 4:30 p.m. in Multikino we shall present “Rodzina na sprzedaż” (A Sort of Family) by Diego Lerman. The film is a Polish-Argentinian-Brazilian-French-German and Danish co-production.
Thanks to the cooperation of the Polish Film Festival with the Krakow Film Festival, viewers in Gdynia will be able to see selected films awarded this year in Krakow. There are five titles in the “KFF Catching Waves” section. On Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m., in Multikino, room No. 8 we will present the film “O ojcach i synach” (About Fathers And Sons).
An exceptional event of the 43rd PFF will be the screening of “Szaleńcy” (Madmen, a film from 1928 directed by Leonard Buczkowski. It will be presented on the New Stage of the Musical Theatre at 7:00 p.m. Until now only an incomplete version of the film was known. Only now it has been possible to reconstruct the film thanks to the digital technology and the preserved original flammable tapes in the 4K film quality. The festival screening will be the repertoire of the film reconstructed digitally by the National Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute as part of the Nitrofilm project. The screening will be accompanied by live music written by Stephen Horne, one of the most famous music composers for silent movies.
In the newly opened Consulate of Culture we will present new films from the 100 Years of Independence series. At noon, it will be a block of short films directed by Marek Brodzki, which were produced as part of the educational cycle “Historia w ożywion film adaptations of selected paintings, depicting events and figures related to the aspirations to regain Poland’s independence. At the Festival selected films from this series will be shown: “Jan Matejko. Rejtan – upadek Polski” (Jan Matejko. Rejtan – the fall of Poland ),”Stanisław Kaczor-Batowski. Wejście strzelców Józefa Piłsudskiego do Kielc” (Stanisław Kaczor-Batowski. Entrance of Józef Piłsudski’s shooters to Kielce), “Stanisław Masłowski. Spring of 1905” (Stanisław Masłowski. Spring of 1905), “Wojciech Kossak. Emilia Plater w potyczce pod Szawlami” (Wojciech Kossak. Emilia Plater in the skirmish at Šiauliai). Furthermore, at 3:00 p.m. at the Consulate of Culture, we will show “Śmierć Prezydenta” (Death of a President) by Jerzy Kawalerowicz, and at 6:00 p.m. “Black Thursday” (Black Thursday) by Antoni Krauze. It is worth recalling that access to the screenings from this section is free. All you have to do is to collect a free ticket at the ticket office of the Consulate of Culture. In turn, in Goplana screening room of the Gdynia Film Centre, at 11:00 a.m. we will present “Wszystko, co najważniejsze” (All That Really Matters) by Robert Gliński.
We are also starting off with a screening in the second, historical section of the Festival, that is “50 Years after March”. At 11:30 a.m, in Multikino – screening room No. 4, we will show “Pożegnanie mojego kraju” (Farewell To My Country), a documentary by Andrzej Krakowski. After 2:00 p.m., in the same screening room it will be possible to see “Szczęśliwi Żydzi” (Happy Jews) by Jonathan Rozenbaum. The meeting that will follow the projection will be hosted by Andrzej Krakowski.
Gdynia City Hall invites journalists accredited at the 43rd Polish Film Festival to a press conference devoted to the plans of creating the Gdynia Animation Centre. This is a new initiative of the TREFL group, realised in cooperation with the City of Gdynia. Gdynia Local Government made available to the institution the real estate in Gołębia Street. This will be another element on the cultural map of Gdynia. The new initiative in Gdynia is to be a space for artistic, educational and cultural activity of the inhabitants of the cities from the region and Poland. The meeting will take place at 2:00 p.m. in Goplana screening room at the Gdynia Film Centre.
The Chamber Stage of the Musical Theatre will become the ground for a science conference devoted to the subject of “Contemporary Polish historical film after 2005”. The organizer of this industry event is Film and History section of the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies. The conference will start at 10:00 a.m. and it will be attended by renowned film historians and film experts representing university centres from all over Poland: the University of Gdańsk, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, University of Bialystok, Jagiellonian University in Krakow and SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities. At 5:30 p.m., prizes will be presented in the Best Book and the Debut of the Year 2017 competition, awarded by the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies. The whole event will be crowned with the “100 Years of History on the Polish Screen” debate that will begin at 6:00 p.m. and in which the directors: Arkadiusz Gołębiewski, Wojciech Marczewski and Rafał Wieczyński, film producer Ewa Puszczyńska and professor Piotr Zwierzchowski will participate. The meeting will be led by Piotr Kurpiewski.
On the third day of the festival, there will take place meetings promoting film books. At 3:00 p.m., Maciej Karpiński will talk about “Little Rose and other screenplays”, a collection of scripts with the author’s commentary. At 4:30 p.m. we will focus on the book “Danuta Szaflarska – Her Time”, which will be a subject for discussion with Gabriel Michalik. In addition, at 6:00 p.m.Marcin Borchardt will present his latest publication “Angels Know No Shame. Transgression in the New York cinema”, which takes up the subject of New York underground cinema from the mid-1950s. All meetings will be held at the Gallery of the Gdynia Film Centre.
“Być jak Pągowski” (Be like Pągowski) – a book under this title is a record of a conversation with Andrzej Pągowski, conducted by a journalist Dorota Wellman. The protagonist is one of the greatest masters of the Polish poster, and his works have forever co-existed with films including Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Juliusz Machulski. They also made their way to Centre Pompidou in Paris, Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Museum of Modern Art in New York. However, Dorota Wellman talks to an outstanding poster artist not only about his artistic technique, but also about his collection of owls and angels, listening to fairies and women who have changed his life. The meeting with Andrzej Pągowski will take place on Wednesday at 2:00 pm in the Museum of the City of Gdynia. It will be led by Weronika Wawrzkowicz.
To end the day, we propose an outdoor film event in Grunwaldzki Square. At 8:00 p.m. will begin the screening of the film”Body / Ciało” by Małgorzata Szumowska, which won the Golden Lions in Gdynia in 2015.
