Industry meetings at the 44th FPFF

Come the 4th edition of Gdynia Industry, a series of events dedicated to creators, producers, filmmaking professionals and film school students. The event will take place on 18th–20th September 2019, during the 44th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

This year’s edition is organised by Polish Film Festival in co-operation with Polish Film Institute who has made the largest contribution to the organization of this section this year. Partners: Adam Mickiewicz Institute, National Centre for Film Culture, and Women in Film.

VR CINEMA

Is virtual reality a real threat to the cinema? Or maybe VR and AR are a natural step forward in its evolution, like sound back in the silent film era? An opportunity to discuss the future that happens now to the dissatisfaction of some.

ARTHOUSE PHENOMENON – 60 YEARS OF ARTHOUSES

What were art houses 60 years ago and what are they now? How to marry ambitious repertoire with market pressure? Come to discuss the arthouse phenomenon, its function, challenges and prospects on Polish cinema market and in film culture promotion.

BOXOFFICE – AMENDMENT TO CINEMATOGRAPHY ACT IN TERMS OF AUDIENCE REPORTING

18th September 2019, 3.00 P.M.4.00 P.M., Mercure Gdynia Centre, Omega Room

The amendment to Cinematography Act obliges cinema owners to make daily reports on the number of cinemagoers, tickets sold and revenue. Will the new box office become a reference point for all entities participating in film production, distribution and screening? What solutions were introduced in other countries? We invited representatives from various fields to allow for a full spectrum of opinions.

DIRECTING CHILDREN’S FILM – HOT OR NOT?

A debate with children’s films directors. How did it affect their careers? How are they perceived by the market? Is it easier or harder to make a “normal” film now? Film school students and graduates afraid that directing a children’s film is lame are especially invited.

NESPRESSO TALENTS PANEL DISCUSSION

18th September 2019, 4.30 P.M.–5.30 P.M., Mercure Gdynia Centre, Omega Room

Aimed at film school students and young creators willing to tell incredible stories, Nespresso Talents is an international short film competition searching for the biggest talents in the world. By working with budding filmmakers, Nespresso fulfils its promise to make a change for the better. We all know that socially-engaged films can shape reality. But do we use their full potential? Our special guests will help answer this question and many more. A panel discussion with a screening of selected Nespresso Talents finalists presented during a gala at Festival de Cannes.

PRESENTATION: THE NATIONAL BOARD OF CANADA

18th September 2019, 11.00 A.M.–12.00 P.M., Mercure Gdynia Centre, Omega Room

The National Film Board of Canada is a public film and digital media production and distribution company. The NFB produces, co-produces and distributes documentaries, interactive documentaries, animations and VR films. With its 12 Academy Awards and 74 nominations, it’s the current record-holder among film production companies outside Hollywood. The presentation at the 44th PFF will be delivered by Rob McLaughlin, a digital media journalist and producer, in 2008–2011, Director of Digital Content and Strategy in the NFB and, since 2016, Executive Producer for the NFB digital studios in Vancouver. The National Film Board of Canada co-produced VR project Gymnasia presented at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.

PFI 2020 OPERATIONAL PROGRAMMES AND STRATEGY FOR 2020–2023

A panel discussion on the condition of Polish cinema and mechanisms of institutional regulation of film industry. Experts will explore challenges for Polish cinema and Polish Film Institute’s role in shaping the market. They will talk about chances and threats to Polish film industry and the way they could influence its future. Some space will also be devoted to 2020 Operational Programmes.

DISCUSSING RETURN OF THE REVELLER

18th September 2019, 4.30 P.M.–5.30 P.M., Mercure Gdynia Centre, Omega Room

In 2017, the National Centre for Film Culture in Lodz commenced the reconstruction of Kazimierz Prószynski’s invention. Similarly to a cinematograph, a biopleograph serves as both a camera and projector. Once it was ready, the team moved on to stage two: the reconstruction of Return of the Reveller. The film will screen during the Opening Gala of the 44th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, followed by the meeting with project originators.

MEETING WITH OSCAR-NOMINATED CLYDE HENRY PRODUCTIONS ANIMATED FILM STUDIO

18th September 2019, 6.00 P.M.–7.00 P.M., Mercure Gdynia Centre, Omega Room

Come to a meeting with representatives of Clyde Henry Productions, a Canadian animated film studio started by directors Maciek Szczerbowski and Chris Lavis, authors of an animated VR project, Gymnasia, presented at the 44th PFF. The directing duo is best known for their Oscar-nominated 2007 short Madame Tutli-Putli. A meeting with both directors and Brigitte Henry, also from Clyde Henry Productions. A Q&A session in the second part of the event. Host: Grzegorz Skorupski (Adam Mickiewicz Institute).

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE AND THE FUTURE OF CINEMA – STREAMING PLATFORMS AND NEW TRENDS ON THE MARKET

Where will we watch films in 10 years’ time? Will premieres move from screening rooms to PC monitors? What will characterise the cinema in the next decade? Is it up for brand new challenges? We will discuss how technological change and new fields of exploitation affect the future of cinema.

AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION SUPPORT. WHAT DISINCENTIVISES FROM “INCENTIVES”?

WOMEN IN FILM: 2020 IS COMING

Film Women – an initiative gathering over 3000 female professionals working in Polish film industry – returns to organise the 2nd edition of a meeting devoted to European Commission directive enforcing “50/50 by 2020”, a programme to equal chances of female and male filmmakers not only through parity in every decisive body, expert commission and jury but also through an equal access to financing. The event is open for all members of the filmmaking community. Experts and filmmakers will answer questions about the effects of double standards and discuss possible solutions to increase women’s role in cinema.

FACE TO FACE WITH RADOSŁAW ŚMIGULSKI

Radosław Śmigulski would like to invite participants of the 44th Polish Film Festival to talk about the most burning challenges for Polish cinema and its potential. The meeting with Director of the Polish Film Institute marks the second edition of Face to Face launched last year. Every media or industry accreditation holder can participate in this 90-minute debate.

POLISH FILMMAKERS ASSOCIATION FORUM

For years now, Gdynia forums of the Polish Filmmakers Association – the biggest such institution in the country – have been hosting heated debates over the most important issues faced by the filmmaking community. This year’s meeting is devoted to “Our Festival”. We will discuss changes in the organisation of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. All participants are encouraged to make their own suggestions regarding such key issues as the length of the Festival, the number of films qualified for the Main Competition, selection process and financing. #NaszFestiwal
