The Official Awards Ceremony in the Competition for the Best Book of 2017 by the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies

We invite you to the Official Awards Ceremony in the competition for the Best Book of 2017, announced by the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies, on Wednesday September 19th, 2018 at 5:30 p.m., which will be held in the Musical Theatre – the Chamber Stage (entrance from Baduszkowa Street).

The ceremony will be followed by a debate “100 years of history on the Polish screen” that will begin at 6:00 p.m. (at the same venue).

In the second edition of the Best Book of the Year, which is organised by PTBFM (Polish Society for Film and Media Studies), won a book by Ilona Copik, “Topografie i krajobrazy. Filmowy Śląsk”, published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, 2017.

The jury awarded the book for the original film-related and cultural approach of Ilona Copik to Silesia and Silesianity on the screen. An insightful and erudite analysis allowed her to interpret in a refreshing and multi-dimensional way the local “topography and landscapes”. The author’s ability to discern between the nuances and shades of the discussed issues resulted in a multifaceted portrait of cinematographic Silesia as an important phenomenon in Polish cinema.

In the Debut of the Year category won “Sztuka generatywna. Metoda i praktyki” by Marcin Składanek, published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, 2017.

In the justification for the decision the jury emphasised the multilayered aspect and, equally, the syntheticity of Marcin Składanek’s book, who managed to comprehensively discuss the phenomenon of generative art. The author’s great knowledge of the field of digital art and research conducted on it is clearly manifested by a skilful and representative selection of cases and in the method of their analysis. The suggested readings combine studies on digital culture, its archeology and technical aspects, with topics from the field of theory of culture and media.

We are very pleased with all the awards and distinctions for our work, but we especially appreciate the recognition received from our environment. This is why we have decided to award the Prize of the Polish Society for Film and Media Studies for the best book in two categories: the Best Book and the Debut of the Year. We want them to be our awards – members of the Society that brings together film and media researchers – said Piotr Zwierzchowski, the president of the Society.

Everyone with the 43rd PFF festival is welcome to participate in the event.
